Are we seeing the first casualty of the Brezza blitzkrieg?

Ford India has today announced new prices for the Ford EcoSport, with the 1.5-litre Ti-VCT petrol starting from Rs 6.68 lakh now (against Rs 7.23 lakh before) for the Ambiente trim, going up to Rs 8.56 lakh ( down from Rs 9.34 lakh) for the Titanium. For the petrol automatic with the same engine, Ford has reduced the price from Rs 10.36 lakh to Rs 9.62 lakh. The 1.0-liter EcoBoost has also got a Rs 80-90,000 price cut across two variants.

The bigger news are the 1.5-litre TDCi price cuts, because they are more generous than the petrol variants. While the base Ambiente trim’s price has been slashed Rs 1.12 lakh to Rs 7.29 lakh, the price for the top end Titanium + now has dipped below the 10 lakh barrier to Rs 9.75 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom, Delhi.

These prices are definitely a reaction after the Vitara Brezza launch, which is priced between Rs 6.99 lakh to Rs 9.54 lakh, ( ex-showroom, Delhi). The EcoSport prices, especially for the diesel is now whithin striking distance of the Brezza’s. However the 1.5-litre TDCi in the EcoSport is more powerful than the 1.3-litre diesel in the Vitara Brezza, with it putting out 98.6 bhp against the Brezza’s 89 bhp. Coupled with the new features and styling changes made to the EcoSport in the facelift, it makes a strong case for itself.

Will this be enough to upset the Brezza applecart? Time (and sales figures) will tell.
