More from Motoring

The latest generation Hyundai Verna is proving to be a successful offering, gaining both support from the market, and acclaim from the critics. The midsized sedan, launched earlier this year, has now been awarded the 2018 Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY), further adding to the car’s bragging rights.

With underpinnings shared with the Elantra, and a selection of powerful engine options, the Verna looked good on paper. In reality, it drives well, has enough power (irrespective of the engine/gearbox) you choose, and comes with a lot of features, too. The use of lightweight materials has helped the car feel more nimble than before, but with a new suspension setup it’s certainly more stable, too.

ICOTY Hyundai Verna

It’s chosen as the Car of the Year after a jury of 18 Indian motoring journalists tested the contenders. With said accolade, Hyundai now happens to have a total of five ICOTY awards – the i10 won in 2008, Grand i10 in 2014, Elite i20 in 2015, Creta In 2016, and now the Verna for 2018.

Hyundai India’s MD and CEO, Y K Koo said, “We are honoured to win the most prestigious automotive award – ‘Indian Car of the Year 2018 for our Make-in-India, Made-for-the-World product- Next Gen VERNA. The 5th generation Next Gen VERNA is a true expression of a Superior Sedan crafted with perfection and excellence in Engineering with highest levels of refinement.
