In a period of ten years since its launch, the Hyundai i20 brand hasn’t just helped the company cements its position in the premium hatchback segment. With over 13 lakh units sold globally, the i20 has also proven that good products can be turned into tour de force despite tough competition. And the Indian market is fairly difficult to penetrate, but even with that, the company has sold 8.5 lakh units of the i20 hatchback here.

A basic timeline shared by Hyundai helps recap the car’s milestones over the years. The Hyundai i20 was launched in India in 2008. The very next year it received a 5-star Euro NCAP rating. Fast forward to 2014, the next-generation i20 was launched in the form of Hyundai Elite i20. Within a year — in 11 months actually — it managed to cross the 1 lakh sales mark. In 2016, the company celebrated a million/10 lakh sales (global) of the Hyundai i20. And now, ten years after the car’s arrival, it’s clear that the 10 lakh sales milestone isn’t too far in India, too. In this period, the car also managed to win 30 awards as well. The latest iteration was launched at the 2018 Auto Expo earlier this year.

Hyundai Motor India Limited’s Assistant VP for National Sales, Vikas Jain said, “We are extremely delighted with this unprecedented milestone that i20 models have achieved of 1.3 Million global sales and have met the aspirations of Indian and Global customers. The i20 established the Premium Compact Segment and has been a stellar brand that personifies Hyundai’s Modern Premium positioning. It has set new benchmarks in the Premium Compact segment and continues to dominate with its world class appeal, performance and looks.”
